Don’t Lose Your Pet

GPS dog collar

A GPS dog collar is a safe bet if you have a dog that loves going outdoors – especially without you knowing.  I can say this from experience since my dog, Charlie, has run of several times.  Thanks to a GPS collar for my dog, the next time he does this, it won’t be a chore to find him.

How GPS Works

USB GPS receivers

When people talk about “a GPS,” they usually mean a GPS receiver. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is actually a constellation of 27 Earth-orbiting satellites (24 in operation and three extras in case one fails). The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite network as a military navigation system, but soon opened it up to everybody else.

Each of these 3,000- to 4,000-pound solar-powered satellites circles the globe at about 12,000 miles (19,300 km), making two complete rotations every day. The orbits are arranged so that at any time, anywhere on Earth, there are at least four satellites “visible” in the sky.

A USB GPS receiver’s job, for example, is to locate four or more of these satellites, figure out the distance to each, and use this information to deduce its own location. This operation is based on a simple mathematical principle called trilateration. Trilateration in three-dimensional space can be a little tricky, so we’ll start with an explanation of simple two-dimensional trilateration.

For Your Morning Run

GPS running watches

Getting lost while on your morning jog can easily happen if you hit a trail or a part of town that you seldom visit, so it would be helpful if you had something that would prevent such a situation.  Luckily, several manufacturers make GPS running watches so as to keep you on your run without hitting any unexpected detours.

With portable GPS units at your disposal, you won’t have to worry about running around the same block five times to get back to the main street.

For the Golf Enthusiast

USB GPS

This summer, one of the big activities my friends and I have planned out is to road trip to every major golf course on the West Coast.  Rather than rely on a standard map or an unpredictable website, we decided to get a USB GPS device.

I found one that specifically looks at golf courses and all it took was a few moments to download the appropriate software.  Now I don’t have to worry about getting lost or anything of the sort.  We can just cruise and plot on how we can win our games.

Sweet Gift for the Nautical Type

portable marine GPS

My dad is using his retirement to sit back and relax and as is such, he went out and bought a boat.  Having just finished his first batch of lessons on water safety, I made the overture and purchased him a portable marine GPS device.

The man isn’t the savviest person with direction and the last thing I would want for my dad is getting lost, so I found him a nice, easy-to-use GPS to navigate around the waters; and even if it’s on a small lake 10 miles away from his house, I feel like the gesture is still appreciated.

Great for Touring and Road Trips

USB GPS

I play in a band that tours roughly seven months out of the year and there have been plenty of times in our earlier days when we were only left with our possibly out-of-date map and our wits.  As you may imagine, we got lost quite a few times.

Now, a mere three years later, everything’s different.  You can’t go on the road without a laptop and you definitely cannot go out with out a USB GPS.  Our GPS is able to plug into our computer and keep us up-to-date on all kinds of information that a non-USB unite would miss.  I really can’t imagine touring without this thing; now we get to shows on time and we’re also able to make good time to really see the sights.
